In light of all of the football drama that has occurred over the past week, a story that may have slipped people's minds is that of Hlompho Kekena and Mamelodi Sundowns reaching an amicable agreement for the former captain to leave the Tswana club. Kekena first joined Sundowns in 2011, leaving Bloemfontein Celtic. Out of all of Hlompho’s appearances, none stand out more than his performance in the Sundowns vs Powerlines game, where the former Mamelodi Sundowns captain helped himself to a remarkable 7 goals; Sundowns won that game 24-0! “Kekena has shown his professionalism for years and he has been a true ambassador to the game,” says Sean Roberts. “Kekena has won 12 trophies in his ten-year spell with the Brazilians, he has been a stalwart in the team.” Included in those 12 trophies are 6 league titles and a CAF Champions League, but recently Hlompho has revealed the only regret he has: “I’m willing to trade one of my medals if anyone has. It's important for me because I have a five-year-old son who is always telling me about the MTN, so now I need to understand the feeling, I don’t know the feeling,” Hlompho quirked. Speaking on the matter, former Mamelodi Sundowns, Orlando Pirates and Bafana Bafana star, Teko Modise (current Mamelodi Sundowns ambassador) says “myself and Hlompho had conversations [that cannot be mentioned] well before anything.”
