Hero To Heartbreak: Springbok Captain Gary Teichmann

Loading player...
In this fascinating discussion about his memorable Springbok career, former captain Gary Teichmann opens up. Gary recalls his Test debut in 1995 after missing out on the Rugby World Cup earlier that year. Less than a year later, Teichmann was thrust into the spotlight as the new Springbok captain after Francois Pienaar was sensationally dropped by coach Andre Markgraaff. Gary and Markgraaff formed a good relationship and success followed with a series win in France. Soon Markgraaff was out and Carel Du Plessis took over and oversaw a series defeat to the 1997 British & Irish Lions. Teichmann seriously contemplated retirement before Nick Mallett took over and restored Gary’s confidence. The Springboks went on a record run of 17 unbeaten Tests before things turned south in 1999. Mallett ultimately dropped Teichmann ahead of the 1999 Rugby World Cup. It remains one of the most controversial decisions ever made by a Bok coach. Gary does not shy away from answering all these questions in this superb episode of Front Row Rugby.
