Short But Sweet: Wayne Fyvie’s Springbok Journey

Loading player...
In the mid-to-late 1990s Wayne Fyvie was one of the powerhouse loose forwards in South African rugby. He finally got his chance to represent the Springboks, off the bench, against the All Blacks at Loftus in 1996. Unfortunately, it ended in defeat rendering that Bok group the first to lose a series to New Zealand on home soil. Wayne played again the following week as South Africa defeated the kiwis to salvage some pride in the final Test before setting off for Argentina, where he would get one more opportunity, again as a replacement. In a country blessed with world class loose forwards who seemingly appear as if coming off a conveyor belt, Fyvie was up against the likes of Ruben Kruger, Andre Venter, Rassie Erasmus and Corne Krige for a Springbok place, among others. Nevertheless, his supporters will fondly recall the impact he made and in this candid conversation he shares his experiences from those days. The high, the lows and lighter moments are all here in this must-watch Front Row Rugby episode!
