On July 20, 1969, astronauts Neil Armstrong and Edwin “Buzz” Aldrin became the first men to walk on the moon after reaching its surface in their Apollo 11 lunar module. The world rejoiced, we had dared to dream and had achieved a lofty goal. However it was apparently achieved at quite a hefty price, and NASA abandoned moon landings in 1972 after Apollo 17.
