Education activist Hendrick Makaneta has strongly condemned the unlawful and intentional killing of a Deputy Vice-Chancellor at the Walter Sisulu University.
We are deeply shocked and saddened by the untimely and tragic death of a Deputy Vice Chancellor at Walter Sisulu University (WSU). This incident is not only a heartbreaking personal loss, but a disturbing reflection of the growing threat posed by criminal elements within our institutions of higher learning.
Universities are supposed to be safe spaces for learning and teaching where studens can flourish and contribute to knowledge production. The presence of violence, intimidation, and criminal behavior in such environments undermines these ideals and places the safety of staff, students, and the broader academic community in jeopardy.
We urgently call on law enforcement agencies to intensify efforts to identify, investigate, and remove criminal networks operating in or around higher education institutions. There must be no place for criminality in academia. Justice must be served swiftly and transparently.
We also urge university leadership, government, and civil society to collaborate in strengthening campus security and promoting a culture of accountability.
Our heartfelt condolences go out to the family, friends, and colleagues of the deceased. We stand with the WSU community during this painful time.
