Short-Term Rentals in the Firing Line: What’s Changing in KwaDukuza?

Loading player...
In April, KwaDukuza Municipality quietly opened public comment on proposed changes to its Land Use Management Scheme (LUMS), the legal framework that governs the types of activities permitted on various properties.

But most short-term rental operators, agencies, and small accommodation businesses across Ballito and Salt Rock say they weren’t aware of the process until it had already closed.

Soon after, several properties were blitzed by officials from various departments, citing licensing concerns.

In this episode, I speak with Tamryn Sherriffs, a long-time Airbnb Superhost and local business owner, who has since helped coordinate a collective response.

We discuss what the changes could mean for homeowners, tenants, and operators, and why clear, inclusive public processes matter.
