The Gauteng Department of e-Government is at the forefront of modernising
public services by leveraging innovative digital technologies. Their mission is
to ensure that communities across the province can access essential
government services conveniently, efficiently, and from wherever they are.
This approach is grounded in the belief that technology should serve as a
solution to real-world problems, enhancing quality of life for all residents.
Addressing the "Gauteng 13" Challenges
In alignment with the Premier's strategic objectives, the Department has
focused its efforts on addressing the "Gauteng 13" challenges. These include
issues such as water shortages, cable theft, vandalism, non-functional traffic
lights, potholes, crime, electricity disruptions, unemployment, and the
proliferation of informal settlements. Through targeted, technology-driven
interventions, the Department aims to provide sustainable solutions to these
pressing concerns.

E-Waste Management and Green Innovation
Recognising the environmental impact of electronic waste, the Department
recently hosted a two-day Waste, Electrical, and Electronic Equipment (e-
Waste) Conference. The event underscored the province's commitment to
transforming e-waste from an environmental challenge into an economic
opportunity, fostering innovation and job creation.
Enhancing Public Safety through Technology
In the realm of public safety, the Department has made significant strides by
deploying surveillance and emergency response technologies. Since 2023,
830 CCTV cameras have been installed across identified crime hotspots.
Additionally, the Gauteng e-Panic Button mobile application has been
downloaded by over 165,000 residents, facilitating direct access to
emergency services.
Expanding Connectivity and Digital Inclusion
Connectivity remains a cornerstone of the Department's digital inclusion
strategy. The Gauteng Provincial Network (GPN) has been established to
provide fast, reliable internet access across the province, connecting schools,
hospitals, libraries, hostels, and community centres. To date, over 1,300
Wide Area Network (WAN) sites, 385 Local Area Network (LAN) sites, 420
Voice over IP (VoIP) sites, and 115 Wi-Fi hotspots have been successfully
implemented.
Investing in Digital Skills Development
The Department is committed to building a digitally skilled workforce. Plans
are underway to provide online digital training to 7,700 public servants and
equip 6,000 young individuals with ICT skills. Furthermore, 200 township-
based ICT entrepreneurs will receive support to grow their businesses and
contribute to the local digital economy.
Promoting Youth Engagement in Technology
To inspire the next generation of tech innovators, the Department will host a
series of Youth Tech Expos across the province. The first event is scheduled
for 24 and 25 October 2025 in Winterveldt, Tshwane, with additional expos
planned throughout the year. These expos aim to showcase innovation,
inspire youth involvement in technology, and open doors to career
opportunities.
Overcoming Financial Constraints

Despite facing budget cuts totalling nearly R1 billion, the Department
remains committed to its mission. A recent two-day Strategic Session was
held to explore alternative approaches and maintain performance under
these financial constraints. Engagements with National Treasury are ongoing
to secure additional support and continue delivering services to the people of
Gauteng.
Conclusion
The Gauteng Department of e-Government continues to demonstrate
unwavering dedication to using technology as a tool for development,
inclusion, and transformation. Through strategic initiatives and innovative
solutions, the Department is working towards a digitally empowered
Gauteng where no citizen is left behind.
