Sakhumzi Maqubela, born in 1971 in Meadowlands, Soweto, is the visionary founder of the renowned Sakhumzi Restaurant on Vilakazi Street, Orlando West. From an early age, Sakhumzi demonstrated entrepreneurial flair, selling snacks and practicing photography while still in high school. Overcoming personal adversity, including the loss of both parents at age 14, he pursued professional growth at a major South African bank, excelling across various departments before answering the call of entrepreneurship. In 2001, he transformed a simple home-cooked meal experience into a thriving business that now seats over 450 patrons and employs 65 full-time staff. Under his leadership, Sakhumzi Restaurant has become more than a dining destination; it is a hub of local economic development, supporting families, local suppliers, craft traders, and youth programs, while fostering Soweto’s tourism industry. His work has earned national and international recognition, including multiple Best African Cuisine awards, Entrepreneur of the Year honors, and features in global media outlets. Today, Sakhumzi Maqubela stands as a trailblazer and role model, embodying the power of perseverance, hard work, and community upliftment.
