In Conversation with Muzi “The Maker” Zimu & Bongane Maqhawe Manyoni

Mad Man Tales: Dilusions is a gripping one-man psychological drama written and performed by Bongane Maqhawe Manyoni, directed by Sanele Radebe, and produced by Muzi “The Maker” Zimu. Staged at The Space Theatre, Joburg Theatre from 6 to 9 November 2025, the production invites audiences into the fractured mind of Mkhululi Zungu, a man confined to a psychiatric ward after being charged with hundreds of murders. Through his haunting recollections, the story delves into a childhood marked by domestic abuse and a nation scarred by the lingering violence of apartheid. The performance merges spoken word, ritual, song, and emotional endurance to create a visceral theatrical experience that blurs the boundaries between sanity and madness, victim and villain.
At its core, Mad Man Tales: Dilusions is a bold confrontation with South Africa’s unhealed wounds , an exploration of how personal trauma and systemic injustice intertwine to shape identity and destiny. The play challenges the myth of post-apartheid liberation, exposing the generational inheritance of violence and the failure of political promises to deliver true healing. Both intimate and epic in scope, the production is not merely a performance but a reckoning — a mirror held up to a nation still haunted by its ghosts, asking us to face the uncomfortable question: What becomes of the child when the hero never comes?
