The council was appointed by President Cyril Ramaphosa and it is mandated to provide strategic leadership on the elimination of gender-based violence and femicide in South Africa. Speaking to Nghamula Chauke, SAFTU's Nontobeko Luzipho who is the Deputy General Secretary said they do not believe that those who have been appointed have enough knowledge of how women are victimised in the workplace and they hope that the President will reconsider his decision.
