Gauteng has recorded an overall decline in several major crime categories during the first quarter of the 2026/27 financial year, covering April to June 2026. However, a breakdown of the statistics at police-station level shows that some communities continue to experience increases in contact crime.
According to the Democratic Alliance, police stations in areas including Tembisa, Diepsloot, Alexandra, Mamelodi East, Orange Farms and Jeppe recorded year-on-year increases in contact crime. Tembisa recorded the largest increase, with cases rising by 16.1% from 732 to 850, followed by Diepsloot at 12.3% and Alexandra at 10.4%.
The party argues that provincial crime figures can mask localised increases, with residents continuing to experience violent offences such as murder, attempted murder, rape, assault, carjacking and robbery in their communities.
