Today marks World Diabetes Day. The World Health Organisation (WHO) describes diabetes as a pandemic responsible for more deaths worldwide than road injuries and nearly as many as HIV/AIDS. In 2012 alone nearly 5 million people in the world died due to diabetes and its complications. Currently there are more than 370 million people in the world living with diabetes and this is set to rise exponentially over the next 20 years as rates of obesity soar. Online is an expert in the field Dr Zane Stevens from the Division of Endocrinology Faculty of Medicine & Health Sciences at Stellenbosch University.
