The Marikana land occupation consist of a community of oppressed and disadvantaged people who live in the backyard shacks in Phillipi. Earlier in the year, the Land Invasion Unit illegally demolished these homes. The matter was taken to the High Court and the City was ordered to rebuild the homes. The City of Cape Town escalated the matter to the Supreme Court of Appeals in Bloemfontein. The case was recently set aside, and will go back to the Cape High Court.
