Competition Commission warns airlines against exploiting travelers with unfair price increases.

Amid reports of rocketing flight ticket prices in the wake of Comair’s suspension by the South African Civil Aviation Authority (Sacaa), the Competition Commission has warned that airlines could be investigating for price gouging.

Comair – which operates its own low-cost airline kulula.com and domestic British Airways flights under a licence agreement – had its air operator certificate suspended at the weekend following a probe into recent safety incidents. After an initial 24-hour suspension, Sacaa on Sunday said that the air operator certificate had been suspended until further notice.
Comair transports 40% of local airline passengers.
"It has now emerged that there are reports and complaints of large increases in price for seats on the remaining airlines some even quoting R5 000 single flight ticket from Johannesburg to Cape Town," the commission said in a statement.
