Careers Corner: Basic human rights and discrimination in the workplace - What do employers need to know?

Loading player...
Discrimination and human rights in the workplace have become more complex than ever before. From evolving understanding of sexual orientation and gender; to health and body rights and personal information in the age of mandatory vaccines - employers have to be increasingly vigilant in order to create a workplace that respects basic human rights and does not discriminate.

Coupled with this, most companies have moved into the digital space of online and WFH models, making it more difficult to monitor some of the indiscretions amongst employees.

Employment law experts at Cliffe Dekker Hofmeyr say that employees who are subjected to discrimination in the workplace must comply with internal policies relating to the reporting of discrimination and ensure that incidents are reported as soon as possible. In the absence of these steps, an employer may avoid being held liable.

This Human Rights Day, we look at what employers need to keep abreast of to ensure a safe and inclusive working environment.
