Kholofelo Molewa, a portfolio manager in STANLIB Credit Alternatives managing the Khanyisa Impact Investment Fund, says the team’s basic investment thesis is that adherence to ESG principles usually correlates to higher returns over the long term. An example is affordable housing, for which there is a huge need in SA’s metros. Typically, the fund backs a developer who builds decent “bricks and mortar” social housing and leases out units for as little as R800-R900pm. Development outcomes, both short and long-term, are measured and reported to investors.
