The Johannesburg Stock Exchange has been a poor place to invest over the last decade – but that doesn’t mean there isn’t future opportunity.

This is the view of Rory Kutisker-Jacobson, fund manager at Allan Gray.

“An investment at the end of September 2007 would have generated a rand return of 8.5% per annum over the subsequent 15 years, and a pretty disappointing 1.7% per annum when measured in dollars. In contrast, an investment in the S&P 500 over this 15-year period would have yielded a return of 8.0% per annum in dollars.”
