Bank Windhoek Doek Literary Awards

Doek, with generous support from Bank Windhoek, is pleased to announce the launch of the second edition of the Bank Windhoek Doek Literary Awards (BWDLAs).

The BWDLAs are awarded every two years and seek to celebrate and promote the works of four Namibian literary artists—two writers (fiction and nonfiction), a poet, and a visual artist—published in Doek! Literary Magazine (Doek!), Namibia’s first and only literary magazine. The BWDLAs are an integral part of Doek’s mission to foster an active, engaged, critical, and robust literary community in the country and also seek to bring a wider Namibian and international audience to the selected works, writers, poets, and visual artists.

Now in their second year, the BWDLAs are seen as an important addition to Africa’s need to rewards its storytellers.

Bank Windhoek, the official sponsor of the Awards, has always been a prominent and active supporter of Namibian art and artists. In supporting these literary awards for the second year, Bank Windhoek reaffirms its commitment to being an important cultural and artistic citizen that is committed to Namibians and Namibia.

Each winning literary artist from the fiction, nonfiction, poetry, and visual arts categories is awarded NAD5000 in cash sponsored by Bank Windhoek. The winners are also presented with a unique trophy commissioned from a Namibian artist.

All longlisted, shortlisted, and winning literary artists are provided with unique opportunities within their particular fields of creation. Such perquisites may include book prizes, further publication in select anthologies, offers of representation, appearances at literary festivals, participation in creative workshops, access to mentorship programs, exhibitions in local, national, and international galleries, and art residencies in Namibia and abroad.

This year’s winners will be selected by an independent panel of judges from Doek!’s issues published from November, 2021 to September, 2023.

The winners will be announced at a gala dinner hosted in Windhoek in November, 2023.
