Dr Niël Barnard, dies

Dr Niël Barnard, first negotiator for a democratic South Africa, has died at the age of 75. Barnard, a former spy boss and first director-general of the Western Cape government, negotiated the transition to democracy on behalf of the erstwhile South African government. He died peacefully in Gansbaai on Monday morning after a long battle with cancer. Barnard was a professor of political science before being appointed director-general of national intelligence.
