With just two days remaining before Finance Minister Enoch Godongwana is set to present the 2025/26 national budget, political divisions over a proposed 2% VAT increase continue to stall consensus within the government of national unity (GNU).The budget speech, initially scheduled for last month, was postponed due to disagreements on how to
address a R60 billion shortfall. MKP’s Gauteng branch organised a demonstration at Pretoria’s Church Square to oppose the VAT proposal. Party secretary-general Floyd Shivambu had previously strongly criticised the increase, arguing that many South Africans are already struggling to afford necessities.
