Morero Holds On: No-Confidence Bid Withdrawn in Joburg Council Drama

Johannesburg Mayor Dada Morero has survived yet another political storm this time thanks to the very councillor who moved to oust him. Former mayor and Al Jama-ah councillor Kabelo Gwamanda dramatically withdrew his own no-confidence motion, saying behind-the-scenes talks with the ANC-led coalition had produced “a collective decision.” Minority parties including the Patriotic Alliance, ATM and the APC were instrumental in brokering peace. In return, the ANC pulled back its own no-confidence motions against several committee chairs and former mayor Thapelo Amad. It was a day of political horse-trading that left multiple councillors including UDM’s Yongama Zigebe safe in their seats. Phemelo speaks to Al Jama-ah Councillor Kabelo Gwamanda about the backroom deal that brought the showdown to a halt.
