Fish Wild After The Storm - KZN REPORT (09 APRIL '26)

Fishing conditions along the KZN coast are aligning well heading into the coming weekend, with patterns unfolding much as expected for this time of year. Rock and surf anglers can expect steady activity where sandbanks, holes and working white water are present, with shad, rockcod, kob and bronze bream all likely contributors. The northern coast continues to show improvement, though success remains patchy and strongly linked to timing, tide choice and periods of northeast wind combined with calmer seas. Central areas offer mixed opportunities, with shad active along beaches and piers and stumpnose and smaller kob feeding along banks on prawn and chokka. Further south, consistent reports of bream and larger non edibles suggest anglers prepared to fish patiently and methodically should be rewarded.
Offshore fishing remains productive for those willing to adapt to conditions rather than wait for flat seas. Pelagic species are firmly in the picture, with snoek, couta, dorado and tuna all expected, particularly along colour lines and slightly deeper water. Success continues to depend more on correct speed, depth and presentation than lure colour. Durban waters are more variable but still hold quality fish for anglers fishing deliberately, while further south the emphasis remains on strong tackle, sound knots and disciplined execution.
Inland, freshwater systems are stabilising unevenly following recent weather, with trout fishing offering opportunities where rivers fine off and stillwaters clear, while bass fishing locally remains dominated by smaller fish. Overall, seasonal transitions are well underway and current conditions point to solid prospects for anglers across both salt and freshwater systems in the days ahead.
