In the latest Angler News South Africa podcast episode, Vinesh Soogreem and the crew highlight a surge in fishing activity along the KZN coastline, with Durban Central and surrounding waters delivering standout results and conditions lining up for another productive spell.
Durban and North Coast Fishing
Durban’s central beaches and harbour have been in top form, producing a solid mix of species including shad, grunter, duckbill rays and the occasional kob. Improved water clarity and calmer seas also opened the door for paddle-ski and ski-boat anglers, who made the most of favourable offshore conditions. Catches included snoek, couta, yellowfin tuna, and a strong showing of quality bottom fish such as rockcod and slinger.
Further north, the action stretched from Blue Lagoon through Virginia and Umhlanga, continuing up the coastline. Anglers reported consistent catches of shad, kingfish and other edibles, while offshore efforts produced couta and tuna. In the Tugela area, the recent lobotes run has tapered off after an impressive spell, but shad numbers have remained strong throughout the week.
South Coast Action
The mid South Coast continues to deliver, with areas around Scottburgh producing a steady mix of edibles and non-edibles. Species reported include kob, stumpnose, bronze bream, sand sharks and larger rock fish. Further south, activity has slowed slightly, although changing wind patterns are expected to improve conditions and bring renewed opportunities for edibles in the coming days.
Inland Fishing
Inland, the Midlands has offered mixed yet gradually improving freshwater reports. River fishing is entering its final phase of the season, with cooler water temperatures signalling the build-up to a promising late-season trout run. Anglers are watching conditions closely as the window for productive river fishing begins to narrow.
