Winter Fish Have Arrived - KZN REPORT (07 MAY '26)

Fishing conditions along Durban’s central beaches have slowed over the past week due to challenging surf conditions. However, the outlook for the weekend appears promising, with forecasts favouring improved edible fishing opportunities. There are clear signs of winter species gaining momentum, with anglers reporting good numbers of shad, kob, and the early arrival of garrick.
Offshore, paddle-ski and ski-boat anglers have still enjoyed productive outings despite the rough seas, landing species such as snoek, couta, yellowfin tuna, and rockcod.
Further north, from Blue Lagoon to Umhlanga, anglers have experienced steady action, catching shad, grunter, as well as other edibles including couta and tuna. The lobotes run near the Tugela River has slowed somewhat, though shad remain abundant in the area.
On the mid-South Coast around Scottburgh, bronze bream have been the standout species of the week, with catches also including shad and the occasional kob. Moving further south, conditions remain largely unchanged from the previous week, with fishing activity quieter overall due to persistent rough surf.
Inland waters across the Midlands are reporting encouraging activity. Trout fishing has been particularly strong, with fly anglers experiencing excellent success and landing fish at the upper end of the size range. While bass fishing at the larger dams has been relatively quiet, smaller private waters continue to produce rewarding results for anglers.
