Big Fish Are In With Shad - KZN REPORT (14 MAY '26)

The KZN coastline has come alive with the arrival of winter species, bringing strong rock and surf action across the board. Anglers targeting shad, rockcod, kob, and bronze bream have been rewarded for reading conditions and putting in the effort, with fish feeding more aggressively as the seasonal shift takes hold. The North Coast continues to produce consistent catches, including kingfish, while the central areas remain patchy but still productive for those willing to work for results. Down south, Uvongo Pier has stood out with impressive GT catches, along with ever-present grey sharks and excellent rock fishing on baits like prawn, chokka, and red prawn. Offshore, despite tough weather, committed anglers found success with geelbek, daga salmon, and snoek dominating catches, particularly off the North Coast, while Durban and southern areas required more patience but still delivered for those who timed their outings well.
Inland, the Midlands has shifted fully into winter mode, with cooler, more stable conditions beginning to improve fishing prospects. While trout rivers have been quiet ahead of the seasonal closure, stillwaters are showing encouraging signs as fish start feeding more actively. With the winter event season now underway and water temperatures dropping, the coming weeks should see steadily improving action for prepared anglers.
