Radio Raps: Rikus de Beer Like You've Never Heard Him Before

This week on Good Things with Brent Lindeque, I sit down with Rikus de Beer, the man behind the wildly popular Radio Raps character, Jonathan.
I went into the interview expecting the larger-than-life humour that has made him one of South Africa’s favourite entertainers. While there certainly were laughs, what I didn’t anticipate was just how grounded and deeply inspiring the conversation would become.
Hearing him reflect on the turning points in his life gave me a fresh appreciation for the person behind the character. At just 26 years old, a severe illness changed everything. After contracting a near-fatal virus and spending six weeks in ICU, he found himself questioning the life he had built. That experience became the catalyst for a bold decision: he left his corporate career behind and chose to chase a dream that made no sense on paper but felt completely right in his heart.
That leap of faith gave birth to Radio Raps, the entertainment brand that would go on to capture South Africans through viral WhatsApp voice notes, unforgettable stand-up performances and the iconic Jonathan character. Alongside the comedy, Rikus also built an impressive business career, becoming the owner of the popular Hennie’s restaurant chain and proving that creativity and entrepreneurship can go hand in hand.
This episode isn’t about comedy… at all. It’s about perspective, taking chances, finding purpose after life’s biggest setbacks and discovering that success often begins with the courage to change direction.
