An education consultant has welcomed plans by the Department of Basic Education to introduce a new three-tiered school system from next year.
According to the City Press, the system is aimed having at least 60% of school learners acquire technical qualifications and hopefully become artisans and engineers among other similar professions. It will see pupils grouped into academic, technical vocational and technical occupations depending on their strengths and weaknesses. The report says it's initially expected to be rolled out at 58 of the country's schools.
Consultant Les Stanley, who has been a teacher for 42 years, says there are many children who are not academically inclined, and such a system would benefit them.
