Re-classifying all road traffic offences under Schedule 5 nonsensical

A road safety NGO says the Department of Transport's call to re-classify all road traffic offences under Schedule 5 of the Criminal Procedures Act is nonsensical. This means traffic offences would be viewed in the same light as murder and rape. While announcing the holiday road fatality statistics yesterday - Transport Minister Dipuo Peters said harsher punishment is needed for traffic offenders. Justice Project SA's Howard Dembovsky says if the proposal is successful, the department would be treating the symptom rather than the cause.
