International hip hop artist Yasiin Bey, known as Mos Def, says South African authorities are holding him against his will in Cape Town.

The artist was arrested last week when he tried to leave South Africa with his family, allegedly using a so-called world passport. He appeared in the Bellville Magistrate's Court and was granted bail of R5 000.

Mos Def left a 10-minute long voice message on the website of Kanye West, accusing the department of Home Affairs of wasting his time.

Home Affairs Director-General, Mkuseli Apleni will address the issue at a press conference in Pretoria at noon.

The department said in a statement that Bey contravened the country's immigration laws.
