The Gauteng Health Department has called a meeting with the National Institute of Communicable Diseases after two new cases of Typhoid fever were discovered in Pretoria. A total of six cases have now been reported by the Gauteng Health Department, while one person has died. The meeting aims to among others establish the state of readiness of all districts and health facilities. Zimbabwe’s capital city Harare has also reported six cases of Typhoid and authorities have deployed medical experts to determine the magnitude of the spread of the disease.
Meanwhile ER24 spokesperson, Chitra Boading, says people should familiarise themselves with how a person develops the illness and the human effects thereof. She says the contagious disease can be spread by either direct contact with the faeces or urine of an infected person, or indirectly by eating or drinking contaminated food and water.
