Booysen and 'death squad' to appear in court

Proceedings in the case against embattled KwaZulu-Natal Hawks head Johan Booysen and 28 members of the so-called “Cato Manor death squad” are due to get underway in the Durban High Court this hour. This is the latest instalment in the protracted trial of the squad which has dragged on for over four years.

Booysen headed up the unit.

The squad faces a litany of charges including theft and murder, specifically of suspects during the course of their arrests.

They allegedly killed these suspects or rivals of taxi operators with whom they were doing business, and were accused of planting weapons to create the impression the killings were justified.

Booysen has won repeated victories against the criminal action and departmental proceedings against him.

He insists that he, and the members of the unit as collateral damage, have been targeted because of his investigation into a politically connected few.
