UFS calm today after violent protests

The University of the Free State says the situation is calm at its Bloemfontein campus this morning after violent protests erupted yesterday. UFS spokesperson Lacea Loader says an urgent investigation is underway to identify those who were involved in the protests.

The University has suspended academic activities today and tomorrow following the protests. Students apparently went on the rampage and vandalised two men's hostels. Police also allegedly fired rubber bullets at one group of protestors. OFM News reporters shot a video during the Varsity Cup rugby match between the UFS Shimlas and Madibaz yesterday afternoon, which showed supporters assaulting a group of protesters who had gone on to the field, disrupting the match. The protestors were chased off the field. Loader said the protesting group and the spectators included non-students.
