Students at the University of the Free State (UFS) have questioned why rector Jonathan Jansen failed to address the situation after violent protests erupted at the Bloemfontein campus yesterday.
This comes after protestors disrupted the Varsity Cup rugby match between the UFS Shimlas and Madibaz yesterday afternoon. Supporters then ran onto the field to remove the protestors and fighting ensued. The group of protestors later butted heads with hostel residents on campus. Police and campus security were on scene and rubber bullets and stun grenades were fired.
A student, who asked not to be named, questioned why Jansen, who was at the Varsity Cup rugby match, did not address the situation.
UFS spokesperson, Lacea Loader, who was at the scene, would not respond to questions about why Jansen himself was not attending to the matter.
She meanwhile told OFM News this morning the situation at the Bloemfontein campus was calm this morning. Academic activities have been suspended today and tomorrow. Loader said several investigations into the incident were underway.
