Twenty-three people are expected to appear in court in Kimberley today on charges of public violence following service delivery protests in Roodepan on Friday.

Northern Cape police spokesperson, Dimakatso Mooi says all entrances and exits to the area were barricaded. Hundreds of protesters from the Ivory Park and Jacksonville informal settlements are demanding better sanitation services and the provision of electricity from the Sol Plaatje Municipality.

Mooi says the protestors, including school children, blockaded all roads leading into Roodepan with burning tyres, stones and tree branches.

The residents say they have to use bucket toilets at night as it is unsafe to use the communal toilets because there is no electricity in their homes.

Mooi says the situation is calm but police are still monitoring the area.
