It was another good day for Team South Africa at the Games with two more medals in the bank, taking the tally to nine over all.
The 24-year-old Vereeniging-born Henri Schoeman surprised and made a big name for himself by winning the bronze medal in the men’s triathlon.
After a good run, Schoeman, crossed the finish line in 1 hour 45 minutes 43 seconds, just 42 seconds behind Britain’s Brownlee brothers, Allister and Jonny, who clinched gold and silver, while another South African, Richard Murray, just missed out.
South Africa’s javelin queen, Sunette Viljoen, won the silver in the woman’s javelin with a throw of 64.92m which she achieved with her first throw.
And Caster Semenya in her turn qualified for the final of the woman’s 800m by winning her semi-final in 1:58.15 seconds.
