Spotify, the world's biggest streaming music company, made its debut in South Africa on Tuesday. It's the first entry into Africa for the streaming giant, with the service costing R59.99/month for a single-user subscription. A family plan is likely to be introduced later.
The company held a press conference in Johannesburg to unveil the product to South African media and to take questions on a variety of topics, from migrating from international accounts to local accounts, whether the company will deploy a content distribution network in South Africa, and how it plans to compete with other music streaming services which are already available to local consumers, including Apple Music and Google Play Music.
Spotify has launched in three markets other than South Africa this week: Israel, Vietnam and Romania.
